Geography
At Wellfield Middle School, we aspire to teach an engaging and challenging Geography curriculum. The curriculum we teach, instils children with a lifelong curiosity and fascination about the world and the people in it, and we believe that this learning continues beyond school. The curriculum is carefully planned and allows pupils to develop an understanding about diverse places and people, as well as about natural and human environments. Lessons are planned to build on prior learning and aims to deepen pupils’ understanding about the interaction between physical and human processes, how these are interconnected and how they change over time. We believe that as the children progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them develop their empathy and understanding of others and their situations, as well as recognising the impact that they have on the planet.

In Geography, children will develop a deep understanding about the wider world, its people and cultures. It is more than map reading, it is about recognising and celebrating differences to increase our compassion and empathy for others and their situations. We will teach children about life outside the North East and broaden their experiences to promote diversity.
Geography and the 5Cs
Coherence
In Geography, learning is based on previous knowledge. Links are made between Geography and other subjects and areas of the wider curriculum. Within Geography, children will make links between different places, people and cultures, as well as between human and physical processes and will investigate how these are interconnected.
Communication
Children will communicate effectively in a range of media. Written, spoken and electronic communication will be taught and modelled. Pupils will be expected to communicate effectively for a range of purposes and with different people, including each other.
Creativity
Children will take part in a variety of different lessons and activities. Geography lessons will be engaging and learning will be memorable. Topics and case studies within Geography lessons will be interesting, varied and relevant. Pupils will be active learners and will have opportunities to develop their own creativity within lessons.
Community
In Geography, children will learn about local, national and global communities and will make links between them. They will develop an understanding of people from all around the world and will recognise the similarities and differences between different communities, places and the people that live there. Children will know their place in the world and the communities they are part of and will recognise the impact they can make on their communities, as well as the planet.
Compassion
Geographical case studies and exploring different cultures, places and people will promote children’s empathy and understanding towards others and their situations. Children will have the opportunity to investigate different perspectives and consider the views of others all around the world. This will result in children having more compassion for others.
